Recently I showed you my River House Table and how I styled it.
EMPTY:
Ever since then, I have been searching for a filler for that long tool caddy in the center of the table. Everything below the tv, needs to be short so that it will not interfere with the tv/remote signals AND the ability to pull out the tv and angle it towards the dining table.
We have also added a sound bar since then. The first one we bought fit into the wood caddy perfectly! But it wouldn’t work with our tv, so we had to return it. The new one works great, but it is too long to put into the caddy and too, the signal for it is in the front so it can’t be covered. This all proposes a design style problem.
DOLLAR TREE TO THE RESCUE:
I have been looking at flowers, the obvious choice, to place in the caddy for weeks now, but didn’t see anything that seemed right until Dollar Tree started putting out their spring decor. I found these tiny pots of lavender and I thought they would work. I bought all the pots they had, which was nine.
Nine worked out to be a perfect number to fit in the caddy.
But they still needed something.
What they needed was a lift.
I found Mr. Menace’s stash of paint stick stirrers and stacked them in the caddy and then replaced the flower pots.
Now, that’s better! They look much cuter now that the flower pot itself shows.
RAISING THE BAR:
Or actually, raising the caddy behind the bar!
After I saw how much better the pots of lavender looked by being raised just a bit, I realized that same trick might work with the sound bar and wood tool caddy. If I raise the tool caddy just a little bit, you would see it better and possibly just ignore the fact that the sound bar is in front of it!
It is subtle, but it works!
In fact, I tried raising it more by placed bigger blocks of wood underneath the caddy and then it just looked silly; like it was hanging in mid-air.
Here you can compare the empty tool caddy, with the pots added, and with the pots raised.
Now, I just need to get those cords hidden.

The little flowers are great! They really draw the eye there. And with the caddy, I really don’t even pay attention to the bar. 🙂
gwingal says
Thanks Lisa! That is exactly what I was hoping for. And Dollar Tree!! ha! 🙂

That turned out great, Gwin! I love the box and you can never go wrong with lavender type flowers.
Simple things like this are my favorite way to deal with a problem. You never know what’s hiding behind something in my house. 🙂

Stacey, I use pieces of cardboard to level a piece of furniture. hahaha 🙂

You using the paint stirrers reminded me of when I had large letters that spelled EAT and I wanted to put them on top of my kitchen cabinets. Because there isn’t a shelf up there I needed to find something that was just the right height. I bought styrofoam blocks and thought I had them the right height till my granddaughter ask me why I had put the word FAT above the refrigerator. lol
gwingal says
Oh thats priceless Victoria! What a great story. 🙂

Cute cute cute! I’m heading to the Dollar Tree!
gwingal says
I want to go back Sarah. Most of their spring stuff was still in boxes, so I need to go see what else they’ve got. 🙂

Great solution to make that area prettier without interfering with the t.v.! Funny story, at Christmas this past year I had pine garland and some rather large mercury glass ornaments intermixed here and there. Well, there were a couple that blocked the infrared signal to the t.v. It was a pain! So, I know how you all feel about NOT blocking the television signal or the picture. 🙂
Happily pinning for you,
Barb 🙂
gwingal says
HAHA those remote control signals are ALL important! Thanks Barbara. 🙂

I remember when you first posted about that table. Love the update! I would never have thought to put so many pots side by side, but they look awesome!
gwingal says
Thanks Kyla! I wasn’t going to use all the pots side by side, but when I tried less, I preferred “more.” Thanks for coming back to check out the update. 🙂
Ann says
Beautiful! It’s always good to have a stash of paint stirrers too!
gwingal says
All DIYers have stashes right, Ann?? LOL Thanks so much for visiting. 🙂
Bethany Stout says
I love this, it’s so cute. What a great idea.
gwingal says
Thanks Bethany. I might find something better later, but for now, the price was right and it’s cute. 🙂
