Adding Entry Character
I mentioned in one of my very first blog posts, that although our house is massive in curb appeal, the interior lacks character.
Once you get through the entry-way, there are no architectural details. But the entry-way itself does provide some interest. It is not a true split level since the living space is all on one level. But the front door is on a 1/2 story lower level.
These two pictures are from before we moved into the house. Mr. Menace considers this wasted space. And it is! But, if you remove this, there would be nothing interesting on the interior style of the house at all. It adds quite a bit of style.
The “iron” piece above the door was cute, but quite cheap looking. It wasn’t iron, just some flimsy metal. So I was on the lookout for something more interesting.
This sign is one of two original RR Depot signs for Acre Station, North Carolina, which is two miles from my childhood home. I remember hearing the train whistle when I was outside playing as a kid. The train still goes by but doesn’t stop any more. I love that not only is this an authentic antique sign, but it is also much more personal than anything you can buy in a home decor store.
One day Mr. Menace and I were walking around the local flea market. We don’t go very often because it is mostly t-shirts and socks and skin care products, and no longer a true flea market. But it had been a couple of years since we had been and we decided to see what we could find.
Our ceilings are only 8 feet tall. We can’t use long chandeliers. But this gigantic light fixture just called out to me as I walked by. The shade itself is 2 1/2 feet diameter.
I didn’t have ANYWHERE I could use it! I mean nowhere. Unless….. maybe…. if we moved the light fixture in the entryway a little bit further down the stairs, it might add a couple of feet head room for something so gorgeous.
It just might work! Now… could I talk Mr. Menace into it? To my amazement, he readily agreed!
It even came with the extension, so all he had to do was wire it up at the original light position and then hang it further down the stairs about 2 1/2 feet and it worked perfectly, leaving 8 1/2 feet of head room.
This beauty makes a huge statement as you enter our home!
There was one moment of panic.
I took the shade to the kitchen sink to wash it before he hung it and something horrible happened! Something was washing off! I got really nervous. Thankfully, it ALL washed off and the result was beautiful. I don’t know if it was added paint or original, but it looks fantastic without it.
Don’t you agree? Here is BEFORE and AFTER comparison of the original light and the new light to help you make up your mind.
I have an idea brewing for that run of the mill railing and banister next….

I love the fact that you used an old railway sign from a place near your childhood home. It’s always nice when our home decor is especially significant to us in a personal way. The addition of plants and flowers makes your entryway so inviting.

Thank you April. I like it so far. Thanks for hosting Hearth & Soul. 🙂
Your entryway is similar to mine and I love your light fixture and the sign hanging over your door. It’s always challenging to know how to give a wow factor to a split level entry. You have done a fantastic job!

Hi Donna, Thank you so much! I do wish flea markets were still flea markets though instead of imports and knock off purses. 🙂
