Are you an individual? Do you not like following the crowd? It makes me feel like a copycat and I much prefer being unique and the first one to do something. So when I found this bed frame and I was ready to create a new herb garden, I hesitated to do what I had seen some others do and that is to create an herb bed inside of an actual bed frame.
One day Mr. Menace and I went on a drive and ended up at his grandparents old home site. I immediately noticed daffodils blooming where the circle drive used to be. It was overgrown and even had mature trees growing, but the shape that the daffs were in definitely pointed to a circular drive. I wanted to explore more.
As we wandered into the woods, through the briers, we located some of the foundation of the house, just a few blocks.
We also saw an old heater.
Almost hidden, and definitely camouflaged, by the huge vines, I found an old bedframe.
A lot of people were re-purposing old bed frames into flower beds, and I knew I didn’t want to follow that trend.
That is, until I found Grandmother Gwin’s bed frame.
It was going to take some saws, and pruners and a lot of work to get that bedframe, but I was certainly coming back to get it. In the mean time, we went exploring a little more.
I would love to live on a piece of land that had a creek behind it. It was so peaceful. We sat there on the rocks, listening to the water falling, Mr. Menace with his memories.
We came back with shovels, pruners, and saws. The headboard was rusted in two and to protect my car from this sharp jagged edge that didn’t fit into the car, I rigged up this friendly waving protectant. Hopefully, it gave a few people behind me a laugh as it bounced and waved all the way home.
A few of Grandmother Gwin’s daffodils now live at my house.
This enamel pitcher also came from the old homesite. I can’t be sure that it belonged to Grandmother but I sure like to think that it did.
I said I wasn’t going to do it.
Because EVERYONE was doing it.
And I don’t like following the crowd.
But I couldn’t help myself.
I love my new herb bed.
I think next spring, I might plant my herbs to resemble a quilt.
Do you follow the trends?

Looks like a fun property to explore! Hunter would love examining that heater. I am just like you in not wanting to follow the crowd. But … I do love your herb bed. And because it is an actual family piece – that makes it DIFFERENT and special. 🙂
It was fun! But was SO overgrown that it took probably close to an hour to get the bed frame freed. If we want to go back for the heater next time you come, I am sure it will still be there. LOL I am kindof wishing my herb bed was a king size…. then it’d be easier to make a quilt of plants. 🙂
The pun isn’t lost on me….”flower bed.” I love it! I do not follow trends unless I really like them. 🙂 And if I really love them, I hang onto them after everyone else has moved on.
What a great way to put it Ricki! I feel the same. Grandmother Gwin’s bed frame will be in my yard for many years, so this IS a trend I’ll be hanging on to. I love when you drop visit for a quick visit. 🙂
So nice, love it! It looks good with the plants. The herbs resembling a quilt would be nice too 🙂
Thank you Grammy! I am loving it. I can’t wait until next year to get more creative with the plantings. 🙂
Turned out great. Love your ideas.
Thank you so much Kage! It was fun when I finally let myself decide that I could, in fact, follow the trend. 🙂
What a treasure. You found so many good treasures at your grandmother’s old homestead. I loved the way you tranported the bed with the gardening glove. And the herb bed is really cute. What you did totally original. 🙂
Thanks Clearissa! I love antiques, but even better when its family. That glove was bouncing up and down all the way down the highway! haha Thanks for visiting. 🙂
This is so awesome What a great idea for planting. I would love to try this in my yard.

Thank you Kathrine. Even though I was hesitant at first, I am really liking it. I’d love to see yours when you do it. 🙂
I think there is something so special about having family heirlooms around, especially flowers! And I am not a copycat either, but sometimes and idea is so good you just have to go for it. Looks great!
Well said Kim! Thanks for the visit and the encouragement. 🙂
Hi Nikki – what a fun adventure! Thanks for sharing and for stopping by to visit me at Vintage Mama’s Cottage. I’m linking up to a few other parties I discovered from my little visit to your neighborhood ;o) Hope to connect with you again soon, Nina @ Vintage Mama’s Cottage
PS I’m with you on not following the crowd . . . I usually don’t even know what the latest trends are until long after they have passed me by and then if I see something I like, I’ll try it out and then discover that it’s “old hat” by that time!
Hi Nina! Thanks for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed your visit. I look forward to getting to know you. 🙂
I love this❤️
Thanks so much Peggy! I am loving it and I am excited to play around with the plantings and see if I can make it look like a quilt pattern. 🙂
I love grandma’s old bed frame. I wouldn’t mind having one myself.
Mr. Menace thought I was just a bit crazy when I said I wanted it but he was all for it when he realized I was serious. Thanks Joanna. 🙂
it looks great and what’s even better is the story behind it. i love it. i’m selective on my trends and do follow some but not blindly. i pick and choose what speaks to me. xo- maryjo
Oh I agree Maryjo! I would never had done the “flower bed” with just any ole bed frame. It took finding Grandmother Gwin’s bed. Thanks for you kind comments. 🙂
If you like something, go for it. So glad you did it anyway. Looks wonderful and a awesome tribute to your granny!
I am now in love with it Christine! Thanks so much for your encouragement. 🙂
Gwin, this gave me a chuckle. I totally agree with you…I don’t like to follow the crowd either, but sometimes I do anyway…haha. Impressed you found the bed frame in the woods. That awesome pitcher was in the woods too? What a find! I like the way you have it displayed on the birdbath. Oh come on…a flower “bed” isn’t so bad…LOL.
Thanks so much Florence! I am loving the way my finds are looking. Now I want to go back and get some rocks. 🙂
What a fun time for your and your husband; exploring land with so much personal history. I’m glad you decide to bring the bedframe home because it looks great. And yes, do the quilt next year! Thank you for sharing with us at Party in Your PJs! Pinned.
Yes it was a fun time Teresa! I want to go back and get more flowers and maybe some rocks. Thanks for visiting with me! 🙂
I’ve NEVER seen this trend before, but I do understand not wanting to follow the crowd! It’s a BEAUTIFUL garden bed, and it’s giving me quite a few ideas! I love the art of re-purposing items from family members long gone, and I think you did it in such a beautiful way. Exploring areas where family members used to live also make me smile very big! Thanks for linking up with the Homestead Blog Hop!
Hi Natasha! Yes, I LOVE exploring where Mr. Menace grew up and his childhood memories. And I love having mementos from family long gone. I hope you will share with me what you decide to do that is along a similar line… I love seeing other peoples projects. Thanks for your great comments. 🙂
It’s lovely! I know what you mean about following a crowd. I have neighbors that copy everything I do in my garden and I find it so annoying. Every one tells me imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but I still get mad about it. 🙂
I do like to be original! Thanks for visiting and leaving your comments Amy. 🙂
This looks amazing! It’s so cool that you were able to find this unique piece and repurpose it. xx

Thanks Holly. I was excited to find it! And now excited to use it. Thanks for your support. 🙂
Love this! My husband and I love antiques and funky looking stuff and gardening. I’ll definitely keep this fun idea in mind for someday in the future!
Lauren, if you decide to do it, I’d love to see! Please share. Thanks for visiting with me. 🙂
What a creative way to use a piece of old furniture! I haven’t lived in a house with a yard since I was a kid, but I hope to have a few gardens of my own someday, especially for herbs.
Thanks Valerie! I do love having an herb garden. And our honey bees like it too. I do hope you get your garden soon. 🙂
The property looked like it was amazing to explore -how fun. I also love how you repurposed that bed frame. It’s so clever, but I love that it has history and a story behind it.
It was fun Donnica! I love that little creek at the back of the property. I’d love to move my house onto that piece of land…. 🙂
What a treasure to find and put to use! Thanks so much for sharing with us at Whisk It Wednesday. Have a momentous week and come back to see us real soon! ~Carrie
Yes, I was so excited to find and get the bed frame and the enamel pitcher. I am glad you like it. 🙂
What a beautiful piece of property. And I just love your sense of humor, both with the waving hand and with what you did with the bed.
Thank you so much! I wish that property with the red barn was ours too, but that belongs to our neighbor. I wish I could have videoed that waving hand. It was hilarious. 🙂
Not only don’t I follow trends (I tend to create them 20 years before anyone else does, like growing yellow watermelon in the 1970’s) but I had never heard of a “bedframe” bed. But it is kind of a neat idea. Except I don’t have a bedframe or an old family homestead, alas. Still, maybe I can find something on the slope behind my house where people sometimes throw stuff.
Oh me too Alana! I was “purple front door” before purple was cool! haha Yard sales are a great place to find “junk” for your garden. Have fun. 🙂
