When I mention that I enjoy gardening, I have people tell me all the time that they have a brown thumb. I have to say, I just don’t believe that!
That person probably brought home a houseplant or a hanging basket from a big Home Improvement Store and since it died within a few weeks, they determined that they just couldn’t grow anything.
You CAN become a gardener if you:
- enjoy buying plants
- don’t mind sweating
- like the scent of fresh dirt
- want to save money by not wasting money on nice nails
- love a fresh tomato sandwich
- don’t mind touching and killing hornworms
Gardeners are people who enjoy getting dirt under their fingernails. In fact, they are often sitting in church when they realize they still HAVE dirt under their fingernails.
They relish the therapy sessions with the earth. They fully believe in the “try, try again” philosophy. If it dies, try it again in a different spot! Or better yet, catch it before it actually dies and give it a new home that it might adapt to better.
Gardening is a trial and error process. No two backyards are exactly the same. The soil will be different. The temperatures in certain areas will be different. And there is no strict rule that works for everyone.
The pleasure is in the trying.
